Lanier Speech Recognition

August, 2007

In August, 2007, The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and Lanier Healthcare Canada formed a Collaborative Business Partnership to implement Speech Recognition in the Diagnostic Imaging area of the hospital. The successful implementation of SpeechQ for Radiology - a complex and challenging project that automated and streamlined the radiology workflow - occurred in June of 2008. The Hospital is already deriving the benefits of the new speech recognition solution, with the radiologists utilizing front-end speech recognition to facilitate a fast and accurate return of reports to the physicians - a transfer of knowledge that is immediate, enhancing the flow of information.

Dr. Paul Babyn, SickKids Chief of Radiology is enthusiastic about the process and the results. "Our expectations have been exceeded. The Lanier Voice Recognition integrated smoothly into our existing systems and the radiologists - who were using analog tape technology - embraced the new technology enthusiastically and quickly."

"The members of the project team have worked diligently to ensure the success of the project and this has resulted with improved efficiency and significant improvement in report turnaround," said Daniela Crivianu-Gaita, SickKids Chief Information Officer. The speech recognition system interfaced with SickKids RIS (radiology information system) (Cerner), PACS system (GE) and ECHN(Electronic Child Health Network). These are all customization work done purely for this project.

Lanier Healthcare's CEO states, "We feel very privileged to have work so closely with the dedicated individuals who are making a difference every day at The Hospital for Sick Children."
