Before SpeechQ for Radiology

Prior to implementation of Speech Q for Radiology, the standard turnaround time for Medical Imaging reports could vary from several days to weeks. Our Department had five full time and three casual Transcriptionists. A few weeks prior to changing dictation systems our turnaround time from Dictated to Transcribed was 192 hrs (July 2008 average).

These significant delays hindered both departmental and institutional goals to meet customer expectations for turnaround time.

After SpeechQ for Radiology

The implementation of Speech Q for Radiology software revolutionized our Department by drastically reducing the overall report turnaround time. Radiologists now have complete control over their report workflow. They are able to dictate, review and sign the report without delay.

A few days post-live the dictated to transcribe turnaround time for most modalities was reduced to 1.5 hrs and after one year less than 1% of monthly dictations were being sent to Transcription for review. Due to this significant decrease Transcription services were no longer required in our Department. In the last 12 months our percentage of reports being sent for review has remained fixed at 0%.

Our Verbal workflow was also modernized - from their office workstations Radiologists are now able to dictate and print the Verbals directly to several internal locations as well as our Emergency Department with just a click of a button in lieu of previously faxed handwritten reports.

SpeechQ has helped us to eliminate processes that unnecessarily prolonged the completion of reports. Physicians throughout the facility have expressed their elation at this exciting new technology and its resulting impact on the continuum of care for their patients.

Before SpeechQ for Radiology

We had eight radiologists and up to 4 residents at any given time reporting.

Our turn around time then was 48 hours (but generally went much longer depending on when they signed their paper reports. We had 3 transcriptionists.

After SpeechQ for Radiology

We currently have eight radiologists and up to 4 residents reporting.

Our turn around time currently is anywhere up to 2 hours.

We currently have one transcriptionist which is now called a medical editor as she does only edits and any interface corrections required.

The impact SpeechQ had for us is that no longer do we have inhouse physicians looking for patient reports because they are completed and on the system so quickly they can access them from the floors. As well the impact is better patient care for outside physicians as they have the reports in their offices same day due to SpeechQ and automated faxing of reports.

Following 5 years of working with Lanier we have reached a point at which over 99.5% of our dictations are done as front-end edits. All of the radiologists have been very receptive to the front-end dictation. We have implemented each new release of the software seamlessly and recent feedback from a returning Radiologist was that the system just keeps getting better.

We also utilize SpeechQ in the Cardiology department and by configuring templates specific for Echocardiology reporting the Cardiologists enjoy using the system.

Since implementation of SpeechQ our report turn-around-times have decreased significantly and have allowed us to meet our Diagnostic Imaging departmental goals. This has also had a positive impact in the Emergency Department , Nursing Units and referring Physicians offices as we have significantly reduced wait times thereby increasing the quality of patient care.

I find SpeechQ easy to teach to incoming locum radiologists. One can train a SpeechQ user in less than 5 minutes & even after that short length of time the user can be quite successful with the system. One of our locums commented that the Lanier system did better for him in 1 week than his previous system did in 2 years. That itself speaks volumes.

From an administrator perspective, this system takes little to no maintenance and when service is required I have found that the service is second to none. The Lanier service team always address my concerns in a timely & friendly manner.

The digital recording system is quicker and takes only twelve to fifteen minutes to dictate a report compared to an hour of officer entry. The VXP system has allowed our staff of transcriptionists, to maintain a very rapid report turnaround time. Some of the features we have benefited from are:
