SpeechQ for Radiology integrates the industry’s leading speech recognition technology, SpeechMagic.
SpeechMagic is a tried and true solution: MedQuist has widely deployed and extensively used SpeechMagic in its own nationwide transcription operations, experiencing significant gains in transcriptionist productivity while reduces turnaround time for those sites using speech recognition. MedQuist is the only company that can cite its own internal deployment and usage experiences when discussing speech recognition solutions.
An Adaptable Engine that Continuously Learns
SpeechQ for Radiology never stops learning. If it recognizes a word incorrectly, the user edits the text, which automatically instructs the system to adapt to how the physician said the word and how it should be recognized. Such a learning sequence allows the engine to customize the speech profiles for each user, without interrupting the radiologist’s workflow to train the engine.
Every user has a custom Context (vocabulary) of radiology words. When a word that is not in the user’s Context is dictated into a report, a message box appears at the time of signature, asking whether that word should be added to his/her personal Context. This feature continually improves the Context, with the radiologist’s control.
Finally, the SpeechMagic™ engine provides Intelligent Speech Interpretation (ISI), with punctuation assistance that eliminates the need for radiologists to dictate commas and periods. If such punctuation is dictated, the system instinctively knows not to insert it twice. With ISI, SpeechQ for Radiology doesn’t attempt to recognize non-speech utterances, such as “ums” and “ahs,” or coughs and other noises. This increases physician productivity and reduces document turnaround time. In addition, ISI greatly increases product acceptance and usage rates by those physicians who have been dissatisfied with other speech recognition solutions they found to be disruptive to their current habits, and less responsive to their individual needs.
Highly Flexible Workflow Capabilities
Your radiologists and editors know their workflow needs better than anyone else. Shouldn’t they be in charge of it? With SpeechQ for Radiology, they can choose to use its front-end speech recognition capability to dictate, edit and authenticate reports in a single session. Originators may also adjust workflow on the fly, and send partially edited documents directly to an editor without losing any content changes. Further, it offers highly flexible workflow options, accommodating dictating radiologist, resident and fellow requirements. This system provides both physicians and editors with the flexibility to ensure the job is accomplished how, where, and by whom it should be.
User Friendly: Radiologists
With SpeechQ for Radiology, enrollment—generally the most frustrating aspect of speech recognition technology—is a breeze. Radiologists can begin using the solution after just a two-minute voice enrollment. From there, productivity and accuracy continue to climb, as SpeechQ for Radiology constantly adapts to each users’ unique vocal profile.
To make it as unobtrusive as possible, SpeechQ for Radiology has also been fully integrated into the physician’s environment by offering a flexible, profile-based user interface that allows for individual desktop customization. This unique profile is saved and presented to the physician wherever he or she logs into the system.
Further, each of the system’s functions can be performed using a variety of command types: voice, mouse click, keyboard entry, or a combination. It’s all determined by the physician’s comfort level and preference. Physicians can employ the SpeechMike for optimal, keyboard-free speech recognition and take advantage of its leading noise-canceling technology. Plus, the microphone allows users to program keys to perform specific functions, including sign report, open new report, etc. For added convenience, radiologists can dictate using a headset, if desired.
User-Friendly: Transcriptionists & Editors
SpeechQ for Radiology extends efficiency into the transcription/editing realm by optionally sending speech-recognized text to an editor for review and correction. Synchronized audio and text playback are reflected by a helpful “bouncing ball” interface for more efficient editing. Plus, every edit updates the physician’s speech recognition profile—making speech recognition more accurate each time it’s used. SpeechQ for Radiology also supports digital dictation and traditional transcription, supporting the workflow options that work best for each physician.
SpeechQ for Radiology employs Microsoft® Word, the world’s most widely distributed word processing tool, as its dictation and editing package. While other products typically use a proprietary word processor to create an RTF document, SpeechQ users have the benefit of using a tool with which they’re already familiar. This means that our users can employ many of MS Word’s features and formatting tools, including tables, columns and different fonts in their reports. MS Word provides SpeechQ for Radiology users a robust tool for creating Auto Texts (macros and templates) to increase their efficiency.
User-Friendly Features
SpeechQ for Radiology provides productivity-enhancing document creation and editing tools to the end user.
AutoText entries, or macros, represent segments of pre-defined standardized text that can be inserted into a report using speech commands, the mouse or the keyboard. To bring standard text into a report, radiologists speak or enter short, simple AutoText commands that can be defined on a system or user level. AutoText allows radiologists to greatly increase their throughput and increase accuracy, because they no longer have to dictate the entire text of a report. Radiologists can employ either singular macros or strings of macros to create complete reports. In addition, macros can be designed as templates to include “fill-in blanks” that the radiologist can use to insert measurements, dates or other elements necessary for the completed reports. Radiologists can also dictate additional information into reports that include AutoText. The pre-defined text is highlighted to visually cue the editor where the macros exist in the text.
SpeechQ for Radiology includes a feature called “Smart Fields.” Smart Fields provide a method of automatically entering data contained in the SpeechQ for Radiology database into a dictation template of an AutoText, such as measurements, the patient’s name or birth date, etc.
Interfaced into Your Environment
SpeechQ for Radiology is orders-driven, employing a powerful interface engine using HL7 messaging to drive the physician’s work list. Reports are uploaded back to a Hospital, Clinical or Radiology Information System in a facility-specified format, and distributed and stored within the practice’s or hospital’s infrastructure. Eliminating patient data re-entry reduces costs and further guarantees accuracy.
Remotely Accessible
Working from a satellite clinic or a home office shouldn’t mean a loss of productivity. Connectivity provided by VPN, http, or https protocols provides full SpeechQ for Radiology functionality whether you’re on-site or off. Comprehensive Security SpeechQ for Radiology has been developed with a variety of legal, regulatory, accrediting, and professional practice standards in mind. Among the solution’s security features are:
- Unique user identification and passwords for each user
- Role-based access controls
- A time-out feature that automatically safeguards unattended terminals
- Extensive audit trails based on user, document, and patient data, capturing events whenever a user transcribes, views, edits, prints, and signs a document
- Reports that provide the “who, what, when, and where” of access to medical documents
- The capability to take advantage of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) programs with 128-bit or greater encryption.

Testimonials
"I am happy to report a high level of satisfaction in the implementation of voice recognition for radiology by Lanier at Quinte Health Care to date. Speech Q is performing well, meeting or exceeding all expectations. It provided an immediate enhancement to my practice with a minimum of orientation and training. Our referring physicians are already providing enthusiastic feedback about the reduced turn around times for reports. I look forward to developing our use of the product to its fullest potential.."
Thanks for all your help,
MattDowney CD,MD,FRCPC
Chief of Radiology
Quinte Health Care
"We have had Speech Q for Radiology installed at our site since May of 2006. The implementation went very well. Lanier has a dedicated implementation team that adhered to the time line & worked closely with our staff to ensure a seamless integration with our existing HIS/RIS & PACS systems throughout the corporation. "
"Currently, 97% of our dictations are done as front-end edits. All of the radiologists have been very receptive to the front-end dictation."
"I find SpeechQ easy to teach to incoming locum radiologists. The SpeechQ training process takes less than 5 minutes & after that short length of time the locums are quite successful. One of the locums told me that the Lanier system did better for him in 1 week than his previous system did in 2 years. That itself speaks volumes."
"From an administrator perspective, I have found that the service is second to none. The Lanier staff always address my concerns in a timely & friendly manner."
